Important Literary Terms


1/ What is Alliteration?
   = Repetition of a consonant at the beginning of two or more words is known as alliteration.
    @Example : "Puffs, powder, patches, Bibles,billet-doux".

2/ What is Anaphora?
 = Repetition of a word or phrase at the beginnings of two or more successive verse lines,clauses,or sentences is called Anaphora.
  @ Example :
  "So long as men can breathe, or eyes can see,
    So long lives this,and this gives life to thee."

3/ What is Consonance?
  =Repetition of consonants without similar vowels     for two or more times at the end of accented syllables is called Consonance.

4/ What is Conceit?
  = Conceit is a comparison between two far-fetched things of different kinds.
@ Example :
"If they be two, they are two so
As stiff twin compasses are two;"

5/ What is Epigram?
   =Epigram is a brief and witty statement which is apparently self-contradictory.

6/What is Irony?
  = Irony is a statement or a situation or an action which actually means the opposite of its              surface meaning.

7/What is Invocation?
  = Invocation is a formal prayer to the Muse for inspiration, help and guidance at the                      beginning of an epic.

8/ What is Metaphor?
  = Metaphor is an implicit comparison between two different things.
#Example: "Liza is a rose"

9/ What is Oxymoron?
   = Oxymoron is a figure of speech in which two contradictory words are put together.
@ Example : " Terrible beauty "

10/ What is Personification?
    =Personification is a figure of speech in which lifeless things are given imaginary life.

11/ What is Simile?
= A simile is an explicit comparison between two different things. Usually "as" and "like" are used in it. 
Example :
                   "We die,
        As your hours do,and dry
                     Away"
